The Paleo Diet for Athletes: A Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance pdf download

Loren Cordain, Ph.D., follows his success of The Paleo Diet with the first book ever to detail the exercise-enhancing effects of a diet similar to that of our Stone Age ancestors.
When The Paleo Diet was published, advocating a return to the diet of our ancestors (high protein, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables), the book received brilliant reviews from the medical and nutritional communities. Jennie Brand-Miller, coauthor of the bestselling Glucose Revolution, called it "without a doubt the most nutritious diet on the planet." Doctors Michael and Mary Dan Eades, authors of Protein Power, said, "We can't recommend The Paleo Diet highly enough."
Now Dr. Cordain joins with USA triathlon and cycling elite coach Joe Friel to adapt the Paleo Diet to the needs of athletes. The authors show:
o Why the typical athletic diet (top-heavy with grains, starches, and refined sugars) is detrimental to recovery, performance, and health
o How the glycemic load and acid-base balance impact performance
o Why consumption of starches and simple sugars is only beneficial in the immediate post-exercise period
At every level of competition, The Paleo Diet for Athletes can maximize performance in a range of endurance sports.

The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter pdf download

In The Captain, best-selling author Ian O’Connor draws on extensive reporting and unique
access to Jeter that has spanned some fifteen years to  reveal how a biracial kid from Michigan became New York’s most beloved sports figure and the enduring symbol of the steroid-free athlete. O’Connor takes us behind the scenes of a legendary baseball life and career, from Jeter’s early struggles in the minor leagues, when homesickness and errors in the field threatened a stillborn career, to his heady days as a Yankee superstar and prince of the city who squired some of the world’s most beautiful women, to his tense battles with former best friend A-Rod. We also witness Jeter struggling to come to terms with his declining skills and the declining favor of the only organization he ever wanted to play for, leading to a contentious contract negotiation with the Yankees that left people wondering if Jeter might end his career in a uniform without pinstripes.

An Accidental Athlete: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Middle Age pdf download

A funny thing happened on my way to middle age. I became an athlete. And not just any athlete, but a runner—all without taking a running step until I was 43 years old

Known by fans as "The Penguin" for his back-of-the-pack speed, John Bingham is the unlikely hero of the modern running boom. In this warm, witty memoir, the best-selling author and columnist recalls his childhood dreams of athletic glory, sedentary years of unhealthy excess, and a life-changing transformation from couch potato to "adult-onset athlete."

Overweight, uninspired, and saddled with a pack-and-a-half-a-day smoking habit, Bingham found himself firmly wedged into a middle-age slump. Then two scary trips to the emergency room and a conversation with a happy piano tuner led him to discover running—and changed his life forever.

In turns inspiring, poignant, hilarious, and heartbreaking, An Accidental Athlete is the story of the unexpected joys of running—the pride of the finisher’s medal, a bureau-busting t-shirt collection, intense back-of-the-pack strategizing. And one man’s discovery that middle age was not the finish line after all, but only the beginning.

Northfield Graduate Killed in South Minneapolis

A 2004 Northfield High School graduate living in south Minneapolis was shot and killed in his home early Wednesday morning.
Shea Stremcha, 25, who in the last year started a job with Ameriprise Financial in Minneapolis and was engaged to be married, was killed after someone broke into his home shortly before 3 a.m., according to A police dog followed a blood trail from the house through the backyard and into the alley. No one has been arrested, according to the Star Tribune.
Stremcha and his wife-to-be had moved into the home within the past year, neighbors told the

Gaylord Bank Robbed; Suspect's Description Similar to Northfield Bank Robber

  • The FBI says a lone man walked into the First National Bank in Gaylord, MN, on Monday morning, brandishing a small, black gun and demanding cash from the bank teller.
According to FBI Special Agent Kyle Loven, the teller complied with the robber’s demand and provided him with an undisclosed amount of cash. After obtaining the cash, the robber fled the bank.

The robber is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and
between 160 and 180 pounds. The man wore a navy hooded jacket and a black mask.
That description is similar to the man the FBI is looking for in connection to the Northfield robbery, as well as robberies in Savage, The alleged Northfield robber is described as white male who is about 25 years old, according to FBI Special Agent Steve Warfield. The suspect is about 5 feet 10 inches tall and between 190 and 210 pounds. He wore a black-hooded jacket, a dark mask that covered his face from below his nose, blue jeans, dark gloves and black and white sneakers, the agent said.
The FBI requests that anyone with information regarding these bank robberies contact the Minneapolis FBI Office at 612-376-3200, the Savage Police Department at 952-882-2600, the Northfield Police Department at 507-645-4475, the Eden Prairie Police Department at 952-949-6200, the Bloomington Police Department at 952-563-8893, the Faribault Police Department at 507-334-4305, the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office at 651-438-4720 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
Stick with Northfield Patch as we updated this story as more information becomes available.

Two Arrested for the Murder of Shea Stremcha

Minneapolis Police arrested the two men a day after officers say they allegedly broke into Stremcha’s south Minneapolis home and shot and killed him. Both men are being held without bail in Hennepin County Jail. Northfield Patch's policy is to not name suspects until they are formally charged, which could happen Friday, but not might happen until Monday, according to Chuck Laszewski, media coordinator for the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
Stremcha, 25, who in the last year started a job with Ameriprise Financial in Minneapolis and was engaged to be married, was killed in the early hours of Wednesday morning after someone broke into his home. His fiancée called police.

A police dog followed a blood trail from the house through the backyard and into the alley.

Barefoot Running: Is Less More?

Two years ago, Anthony Pierre was relegated to running only a few miles a day after his injuries were becoming a constant hindrance.
“IT band, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis were all my enemies. I had pretty much quit running until I read Born to Run. I picked up the book and took off my shoes," the Carleton College applications support specialist said. "A couple of weeks later, my injuries were evaporating. It was like a religious experience to be able to run pain-free.”
Welcome to a different—sort of—way of running.
If you spot what looks like gorilla tracks in the Carleton Arboretum, or spot folks who at first seem to be walking on their hands, don’t be alarmed. These are just the Northfield imprint of a craze that’s sweeping the nation: barefoot—or nearly barefoot—running.
Those shoes that make you look like Bigfoot with his dogs painted black are Vibram FiveFingers—just one of many “minimalist” shoes flooding the market.
They hope to capitalize on the movement toward a more natural style of running that many experts say can minimize injuries while restoring the joys of running more like a child on the beach and less like a machine prone to frequent break-downs.

Ford Hits the Globe Running

Earlier this year, Ford CEO Alan Mulally announced ambitious plans for Ford's global growth, including increasing sales by a whopping 50% over the next four years. If it meets that goal, Ford will sell 8 million vehicles around the world, putting it on par with Toyota, the world's No. 1 automaker. I decided to check in on the company's progress around the rest of the globe. After all, in 2010, markets outside of North America accounted for 49% of all sales, and that number is only expected to grow.
Canada
We'll start with our neighbors to the north. Ford had its best Canadian June since 1989, watching total sales increase 6% over last year. Six Ford models had double-digit increases over last year.

Model
% Sales Increase
Focus12%
Mustang40%
Fusion9%
Taurus19%
Edge56%
Transit Connect77%
Explorer85%

Source: Company press release.
Ford has already sold more Ford Explorers in Canada than they did all of last year. These results have propelled Ford to the No. 1 automaker position in Canada for the month of June and year-to-date.
Brazil
Despite being one of the hottest auto markets in the world this year, auto sales fell in Brazil in June. Ford sales were down 1.7% from May, but I have a hard time calling the month a failure. Brazil's economy is expected to grow at 4% for the remainder of the year, and the biggest problem automakers face is meeting surging demand with a shortage of skilled workers and frequent worker strikes. Let's see how the market leaders fared in June.

Company
% Sales Increase
Ford(1.7%)
Fiat (OTC: FIATY.PK)0.6%
Volkswagen (OTC: VLKAY.PK)(8.9%)
General Motors (NYSE: GM) (3.6%)

Source: Reuters.
Volkswagen suffered the worst decline in sales, mostly because of striking workers, but it actually sold the most cars after Fiat. Fiat sold 2.5 times more vehicles than Ford in Brazil during June, but Ford's small sales decrease means the Blue Oval is doing a good job of holding on to its numbers. There is definitely room for improvement, but again, not the worst news in the world.
United Kingdom Ford is enjoying some impressive successes across the pond. Again, overall car sales in the U.K. were down for the month of June. For all automakers other than Ford, that is. June car sales increased 3% over the same time last year. Market share was up 1 percentage point, and, much like with Canada, these increases mean that Ford is No. 1 in U.K. auto sales.
Middle East
Unlike almost every other region in the world, Ford's fuel-efficient models aren't driving growth in the Middle East. Across the region, the mid-sized Taurus led all models in growth.

Model
% Sales Increase
Taurus163%
Fusion87%
Mustang33%

Source: Gulf News.
Who would've predicted that oil-rich nations wouldn't be interested in fuel-efficient vehicles? Regardless, the above sales increases have contributed to Ford's growing market share in the Gulf. Sales through the first half of the year in the Gulf region grew 63% over the same period last year, with Saudi Arabia leading the way with 88% growth.
China
Ford has some ground to gain in Asia, where companies like General Motors and Volkswagen have more prominent brands and larger market share. Through the first half of the year, sales are up 14% over the same time last year. Sales for the month of June are up 11% over last year.
Ford's joint ventures in China are also seeing success this year. Sales climbed 16% in June for Changan Ford Mazda Automobile. Year-to-date, sales for the company's Jiangling Motors Corporation are up 19% over the same time last year. To continue growing these numbers, Ford has three Chinese plants coming online between now and 2013. All of this is part of Ford's plan to have 32% of global sales come from the Asia Pacific region.
Foolish takeaway
In a few instances, Ford's June sales dipped a bit from May sales. Frankly, it's just not enough to cause me to worry. The company showed excellent growth through the first half of the year on a global scale. While there is no way to predict whether it can meet Mulally's goal of increasing global sales by 50% by 2015, Ford is certainly making progress.

Lance Armstrong: It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life

by Lance Armstrong, Sally Jenkins , ?Lance Armstrong: It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life?
In 1996, young cycling phenom Armstrong discovered he had testicular cancer. In 1999, he won the Tour de France. Now he's a grateful husband, a new father and a memoirist: with pluck, humility and verve, this volume covers his early life, his rise through the endurance sport world and his medical difficulties. Cancer "was like being run off the road by a truck, and I've got the scars to prove it," Armstrong declares. Earlier scars, he explains, came from a stepfather he casts as unworthy; early rewards, from his hardworking mother and from the triathlons and national bike races Armstrong won as a Texas teen. "The real racing action was over in Europe": after covering that, Armstrong and Jenkins (Men Will Be Boys, with Pat Summit, etc.) ascend to the scarier challenges of diagnoses and surgeries. As he gets worse, then better, Armstrong describes the affections of his racing friends and of the professionals who cared for him. Armstrong is honest and delightful on his relationship to wife Kristin (Kik), and goes into surprising detail about the technology that let them have a child. The memoir concludes with Armstrong's French victory and the birth of their son. The book features a disarming and spotless prose style, one far above par for sports memoirs. Bicycle-racing fans will enjoy the troves of inside information and the accounts of competitions, but Armstrong has set his sights on a wider meaning and readership: "When I was sick I saw more beauty and triumph and truth in a single day than I ever did in a bike race."

FINALLY: The Golf Swing´s Simple Secret pdf download

Have you ever wondered why the average handicap on the USGA has barely improved in the last 20 years? The answer is very simple:
a) The Golf Swing is very difficult to understand and to perform.
b) The average weekend golfer would love to improve but doesn´t have the time or the interest to spend long hours practicing.
After studying the golf swing for over 25 years, JF Tamayo has developed a revolutionary method proved for the weekend golfer of any level to significantly improve distance and accuracy from day one, based on three main principles:
1) FOCUS ON CHANGES THAT MOST POSITIVELY AFFECT RESULTS: Opposite to the traditional methods, this book will only ask you to make changes in the most relevant parts of the swing needed to hit solid and consistent shots: the backswing and the transition between the backswing and the downswing.
2) LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP AN EASY, REPEATABLE AND SOLID BACKSWING: One of the biggest breakthroughs of the method was the development of a unique and much easier way to consistently make a solidly sound backswing that will look similar to the new Tiger Wood´s one plane backswing but much simpler to learn, to do and to repeat.
3) LEARN HOW TO CREATE LAG: Being able to increase lag during the downswing is one of the major differences between the amateur's golf swing versus a professional's and probably one of the most misunderstood concepts of golf. In this book you will easily learn how to lag the club like the pros, dramatically improving your clubhead speed, ball striking ability and distance.
This incredible and simple method will instantly take your game to a higher level while you will be helping others since 50% of the profits obtained from this project will be donated to charity.

Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference pdf download

St. John (Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer) builds on his 2007 New York Times article about the Fugees, a soccer program for boys from families of refugees from war-torn nations who have been resettled in the town of Clarkston, Ga., 13 miles east of Atlanta. Led by the founder and coach Luma Mufleh, a strong-willed, Jordanian woman who turned her back on a privileged past to stay in America after attending Smith College, the three youth teams are a conglomeration of players from Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East. The challenges they face are many, including an ongoing fight against city hall for a field on which to play, and getting by with subpar equipment. Their biggest challenge, however, is the difficulty immigrants face in learning the ways of a strange land and living with the memories of tragedy (some players had lost a parent to violence or imprisonment). In spite of it all, the Fugees compete admirably with mostly white, better-funded suburban teams. St. John begins with an inspiring description of a beautifully played game and then delves into the team's formation, but his storytelling takes on the methodical approach of a long series of newspaper articles that lack narrative flair and progression. The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival pdf download

A few years ago, I interviewed a Delaware state trooper named Butch LeFebvre who’d been assigned to investigate rumors that a mountain lion was roaming the outskirts of Wilmington. It was silly, of course--big cats had been wiped out on the East Coast more than a century ago. But just to be safe, LeFebvre strapped on night-vision goggles, loaded a rifle with a tranquilizer dart, and set off into the woods behind the Du Pont Country Club. By 3 A.M, he’d spotted nothing, so he headed back to his truck. The next evening, he returned to the same spot for another look--and found paw tracks following his footprints all the way back to where he’d parked. LeFebvre was an experienced hunter, but he learned something that night: one killer out there was doing a great job of watching and thinking and learning, and it wasn’t him.

To this day, the Wilmington lion has never attacked or even emerged from the suburban shadows. Not so lucky, however, is the Siberian village in John Vaillant’s chilling The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival. In 1997, deep in the remote Russian backcountry, a gigantic Amur tiger begins acting like the only thing more savage than a wild animal--us. It doesn’t just attack villagers; it hunts them, picking its targets like a hitman with a contract, at one point even dragging a mattress out of a shack so it can lie comfortably in wait until the woodsman returns home. A few days later, the woodsman’s horrified friends discover remains “so small and so few they could have fit in a shirt pocket.”

The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing pdf download

“Welcome to what will undoubtedly be a whole new level of athletic performance.”—Mark Allen, six-time winner of the Hawaii Ironman.

Are you a triathlete, runner, cyclist, swimmer, cross-country skier, or other athlete seeking greater endurance? The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing teaches athletes how to stay healthy, achieve optimal athletic potential, and be injury-free for many productive years. Dr. Philip Maffetone’s approach to endurance offers a truly “individualized” outlook and unique system that emphasizes building a strong aerobic base for increased fat burning, weight loss, sustained energy, and a healthy immune system. Good nutrition and stress reduction are also key to this commonsense, big-picture approach.
In addition, Dr. Maffetone dispels many of the commonly held myths that linger in participatory sports—and which adversely impact performance—and explains the “truths” about endurance, such as:

  • The need to train slower to race faster will enable your aerobic system to improve endurance
  • Why expensive running shoes can actually cause foot and leg injuries
  • The fact that refined carbohydrates actually reduce endurance energy and disrupt hormone balance
  • And more.

If you are looking to increase your endurance and maximize your athletic potential, The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing is your one-stop guide to training and racing effectively. 50 black-and-white illustrations

The Last Boy: Mickey Mantle and the End of America's Childhood pdf download

As she did so memorably in her biography of Sandy Koufax, Jane Leavy transcends the hyperbole of hero worship to reveal the man behind the coast-to-coast smile, who grappled with a wrenching childhood, crippling injuries, and a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. In The Last Boy she chronicles her search to find out more about the person he was and, given what she discovers, to explain his mystifying hold on a generation of baseball fans, who were seduced by that lopsided, gap-toothed grin. It is an uncommon biography, with literary overtones: not only a portrait of an icon, but an investigation of memory itself. How long was the Tape Measure Home Run? Did Mantle swing the same way right-handed and left-handed? What really happened to his knee in the 1951 World Series? What happened to the red-haired, freckle-faced boy known back home as Mickey Charles?

"I believe in memory, not memorabilia," Leavy writes in her preface. But in The Last Boy, she discovers that what we remember of our heroes—and even what they remember of themselves—is only where the story begins.

Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman pdf download

In Where Men Win Glory, Jon Krakauer draws on Tillman’s journals and letters, interviews with his wife and friends, conversations with the soldiers who served alongside him, and extensive research on the ground in Afghanistan to render an intricate mosaic of this driven, complex, and uncommonly compelling figure as well as the definitive account of the events and actions that led to his death. Before he enlisted in the army, Tillman was familiar to sports aficionados as an undersized, overachieving Arizona Cardinals safety whose virtuosity in the defensive backfield was spellbinding. With his shoulder-length hair, outspoken views, and boundless intellectual curiosity, Tillman was considered a maverick. America was fascinated when he traded the bright lights and riches of the NFL for boot camp and a buzz cut. Sent first to Iraq—a war he would openly declare was “illegal as hell” —and eventually to Afghanistan, Tillman was driven by complicated, emotionally charged, sometimes contradictory notions of duty, honor, justice, patriotism, and masculine pride, and he was determined to serve his entire three-year commitment. But on April 22, 2004, his life would end in a barrage of bullets fired by his fellow soldiers.

The Faraway Horses: The Adventures and Wisdom of One of America's Most Renowned Horsemen pdf download

"I've started horses since I was 12 years old and have been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over. I've tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep from getting myself killed. This method works well for me because of the kinship that develops between horse and rider. " --Buck Brannaman

Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf pdf download

Jim Fogerty Professional, Sunset Country Club, St. Louis Most articles on golf deal only in theory, but Ben is to be congratulated on probably the most practical series on golf instruction ever written.
Timothy E. Sick Calgary After reading the first two articles, I had a 73 for the first time in my life, and hadn't played for six months before that.
Frank Sadler Professional, Bellingham Country Club, Bellingham, Washington It's the first time words and illustrations have made golfing technique absolutely clear. I'm applying the lessons to my teaching program here and highly recommending them to my pupils. I'd say it's the greatest instruction series of all time. Women are particularly keen on it. The Rules of Golf in Plain English, Second Edition pdf download

"The cry for the simplification of the Rules of Golf is a stock-in-trade of the journalist during the winter months. Countless words on the subject have been poured out to an ever-tolerant public, but still the long-sought simplification does not come."—Henry Longhurst, 1937
The hopes of renowned writer and golfer Henry Longhurst—and millions of golfers before and after him—have finally been realized. In The Rules of Golf in Plain English, Bryan A. Garner, American English language and usage expert, and Jeffrey S. Kuhn, volunteer USGA rules official, have translated the knotty Rules with the encouragement and permission of the United States Golf Association. The result is a modern, readable version that offers, for the first time, clear guidance to both amateurs and professionals.
Based on a 338-word set of thirteen rules written in 1744, the official Rules have grown, over two and a half centuries, to 40,000 words. Numerous contributors and a complex revision process have rendered these Rules so opaque and stylistically inconsistent that a companion volume—the 600-page Decisions on the Rules of Golf—has been published to help golfers navigate them.
Both lawyers and avid golfers, Kuhn and Garner recognized the difficulties that the language of the Rules of Golf created, especially in a sport that expects players to call penalties on themselves. By reworking the Rules line by line, word by word, they have produced an accessible resource that no golfer—from the duffer to the pro—should be without.

You've gone too far this time, Sir! pdf download

Have you ever woken up in the sultry heat of the morning, your hair and beard teeming with maggots, and then had potatoes picked out of your ears? Have you ever felt the cold barrel of a semi automatic gun against your forehead? When Danny Bent cycled 15,000 kilometres from the UK to India to raise money for ActionAid, it was a decision that took twenty years and one minute. For twenty years he had wanted to do something to raise money for charity. The one minute was when as their teacher he was put on the spot by his pupils and declared that the means was by bike, and he was going to India. What he had signed up for was slogging along roads with trucks bearing down on him, unable to see and choking in the smog; shooting down treacherous descents with 100 foot drops, shaking with cold and too numb to brake; muscle burn and saddle sores; delirium and food poisoning; thirst and malnutrition; foul and insanitary conditions; life-threatening crises; obstructive border guards, crazed dogs and inquisitive passers-by. 'You've Gone Too Far This Time, Sir!' is a real and compelling blow-by-blow account of Danny's trip across Europe, the former Soviet Republics, Russia, China, Pakistan and India. And what people he met! They are the true delight of this book, mostly charming, sometimes reckless, occasionally threatening, always unpredictable, and forever inviting Danny to be up for the challenge of entertaining them, in one instance by dancing in front of a packed stadium, in another by eating sheep's brains in a local night market. Danny turns the wheels, you turn the pages. The pace is relentless. The story is both heart-stopping and heart-warming. The arrival is breakdown-and-cry emotional. And there's loads of fun and wonderment along the way too. What a book! What a ride! Live your dream. Go for it, Danny.

Friday Night Lights Mass Market TV Tie-in pdf download

Secular religions are fascinating in the devotion and zealousness they breed, and in Texas, high school football has its own rabid hold over the faithful. H.G. Bissinger, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, enters into the spirit of one of its most fervent shrines: Odessa, a city in decline in the desert of West Texas, where the Permian High School Panthers have managed to compile the winningest record in state annals. Indeed, as this breathtaking examination of the town, the team, its coaches, and its young players chronicles, the team, for better and for worse, is the town; the communal health and self-image of the latter is directly linked to the on-field success of the former. The 1988 season, the one Friday Night Lights recounts, was not one of the Panthers' best. The game's effect on the community--and the players--was explosive. Written with great style and passion, Friday Night Lights offers an American snapshot in deep focus; the picture is not always pretty, but the image is hard to forget. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail pdf download

Your initial reaction to Bill Bryson's reading of A Walk in the Woods may well be "Egads! What a bore!" But by sentence three or four, his clearly articulated, slightly adenoidal, British/American-accented speech pattern begins to grow on you and becomes quite engaging. You immediately get a hint of the humor that lies ahead, such as one of the innumerable reasons he longed to walk as many of the 2,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail as he could. "It would get me fit after years of waddlesome sloth" is delivered with glorious deadpan flair. By the time our storyteller recounts his trip to the Dartmouth Co-op, suffering serious sticker shock over equipment prices, you'll be hooked.

Open: An Autobiography - Andre Agassi pdf download

Agassi has always had a tortured look in his eyes on the tennis court. In 1992, when he burst onto the world sports stage by winning the Grand Slam at Wimbledon, he looked like a deer in headlights. Nobody seemed more surprised and upset by his big win that day than he did. For good reason, too. Agassi hated tennis. This is the biggest revelation in his very revealing autobiography. Agassi has hated tennis from early childhood, finding it extremely lonely out on the court. But he didn’t have a choice about playing the game because his father drove him to become a champion, like it or not. Mike Agassi, a former Golden Gloves fighter who never made it professionally, decided that his son would become a champion tennis player. In militaristic fashion, Mike pushed seven-year-old Andre to practice relentlessly until the young boy was exhausted and in pain. He also arranged for Andre, age 13, to attend a tennis camp where he was expected to pull weeds and clean toilets. The culmination of all of this parental pushing came when Andre began winning as an adult. But it didn’t make him happy. Within this framework, Agassi’s other disclosures make sense. He had a troubled marriage to Brooke Shields that didn’t last. He developed a drug problem that sabotaged his career. He was insecure about everything. Only when Andre met tennis star Steffi Graf (whom he eventually married) did things begin to change. Readers will definitely cheer when Andre finally makes peace with the game he once hated and learns to enjoy it. --Jerry Eberle

Tree’s carefully cultivated image of country club values has made him so beloved by corporate America that he is the first celebrity in history to endorse Coke and Pepsi. As it turns out, so do a good many agreeable young women. When a reporter uncovers evidence that Tree’s sexual appetites are as prodigious as his tee shots, his public and private lives collide, producing the juiciest scandal in sports history.

In this high-spirited romp that recalls the hilarious work of Dan Jenkins and Rick Reilly, two veteran Sports Illustrated writers have some wicked fun with recent events as they take us inside “Treeworld” and the secret society of elite golf. It’s a wild ride that whisks us between the ropes and the sheets of the PGA Tour, cracks open Tree’s cloistered inner circle, and propels us around the world in high style . . . from Tree’s top-secret compound in Florida to the wine cellar of Augusta National for an illicit tryst on Masters Sunday . . . from the deck of his $61 million yacht to the plush interior of his favorite private plane (he owns a few) . . . from the secluded beaches of Maui to an exclusive Southampton estate.

As the scandal spirals out of control and Tree is forced underground, we get to know his entourage: Andrew Finkelman, his famously brusque manager who left IGM to manage

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster - Jon Krakauer

A bank of clouds was assembling on the not-so-distant horizon, but journalist-mountaineer Jon Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mt. Everest, saw nothing that "suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down." He was wrong. The storm, which claimed five lives and left countless more--including Krakauer's--in guilt-ridden disarray, would also provide the impetus for Into Thin Air, Krakauer's epic account of the May 1996 disaster. With more than 250 black-and-white photographs taken by various expedition members and an enlightening new postscript by the author, the Illustrated Edition shows readers what this tragic climb looked like and potentially provides closure for Krakauer and his detractors.

The Long Run: A New York City Firefighter's Triumphant Comeback from Crash Victim to Elite Athlete pdf download

A New York City Firefighter's Triumphant Comeback from Crash Victim to Elite Athlete

On the morning of December 22, 2005, Matt Long was cycling to work in the early morning when he was struck by and sucked under a 20-ton bus that was making an illegal turn. The injuries he sustained pushed him within inches of his life. Miraculously, more than 40 operations and months later, Matt was able to start his recovery. In spite of the severity of his injuries, Matt found the psychological consequences of the accident nearly as hard to process. He would no longer be able to compete at the highest level. In the 18 months before the accident, he had competed in more than 20 events including several triathlons and marathons and had qualified for running's most prestigious race, the Boston Marathon. After the accident, his doctor told him he'd be lucky if he could even walk without a cane.

The Long Run is an emotional and incredibly honest story about Matt's determination to fight through fear, despair, loneliness, and intense physical and psychological pain to regain the life he once had. The book chronicles Matt's road to recovery as he teaches himself to walk again and, a mere three years later, to run in the 2008 New York City Marathon - a gimpy seven-and-a-half hour journey through the five boroughs. "Running saved my life," Matt says, and his embrace of the running community and insistence on competing in the marathon has inspired many, turning him into a symbol of hope and recovery for untold numbers of others.

A.M. and P.M. Yoga download

A.M. Yoga for Beginners
"The morning is a precious time," says the narrator of A.M. Yoga for Beginners. "Just as the sun rises and falls, so do our natural rhythms. The morning is perfect time to open our bodies and center our minds." This 20-minute yoga practice with supple instructor Rodney Yee is the perfect way to start your day by energizing your body and calming your mind. Filmed on the beach at Maui at sunrise, the video starts with a 4-minute Conscious Relaxation focusing on breathing, then glides into a 14-minute series of yoga poses that are simultaneously relaxing and energizing. It ends with a 2-minute seated Guided Meditation to center your body and mind. Yee's instruction is detailed and gentle. The video is beautifully filmed: you watch the waves roll in as Yee demonstrates yoga poses on a sandy beach. The yoga practice awakens and stretches your muscles gently, leaving you balanced and focused. "Yoga is the foundation of my day," says Yee. "A few minutes in the morning will help give meaning to your day." --Joan Price

P.M. Yoga for Beginners
"The evening is the perfect time to calmly transition between being active and being quiet," says Patricia Walden, instructor of P.M. Yoga for Beginners. "One of the greatest gifts yoga has to offer is deep relaxation." This 20-minute program is designed to balance, calm, and revitalize you at the end of the day. It starts with centering poses: gentle stretches bringing awareness and quiet to your senses. Next are standing poses to release tension, increase circulation, expand the lungs, and help you breathe more deeply. Next, forward bends cool the body and bring quiet to the nervous system. The final restorative poses are so relaxing that you may fall asleep. Walden tells you not only how to do the poses, but what you should feel, and how to quiet your body and your mind. Instruction is soothing and explicit. Although this video is aimed at beginners, seldom are modifications given for the less flexible novice, so if any pose causes discomfort or seems impossible, don't push beyond your personal comfort level. The video was filmed on the windswept sands of Death Valley. --Joan Price
